Fly Fishing Book Review - The Orvis Guide to Prospecting for Trout

The Orvis Guide to Prospecting for Trout. How to Catch Fish When There's No Hatch to Match (New and Revised) by Tom Rosenbauer.
Inspiring Cover

If you are living in Ottawa, or somewhere in the rest of Eastern Ontario you may think that a book on trout fishing strategies just isn't for you.  There are not a lot of natural trout streams and rivers in the Ottawa area.

What we do have are many rivers and streams that hold fish and many, many species of warmwater fish that can behave very similar to trout in the right water conditions.  In our rivers and streams there are smallmouth bass that relate to 'trout' structure, creek chub and fallfish that feed heavily on insects on the surface, and pike, walleye and musky that chase streamers in tailouts and riffles.

This book has information for everyone that enjoys fishing in moving water.

This book is written for everyone.  For the beginner there is a suggested starter selection of prospecting flies including streamers, drys and wet flys. An introduction to casting, presentation and positioning are described as well.

For the more advanced fly fisherman (or woman) there are chapters on rich and poor streams, reading the water, and the chapter on approach.  The rich/poor stream chapter avoids the very technical scientific review of why certain streams have lots of bugs and some don't, instead describing how to spot the difference between a rich or poor stream and how it affects the flies and tactics you should choose.

The chapters on reading the water and approach are well suited for review before each season, or after a tough day.  When I read it I can picture certain sections of my favorite streams, and remember how I've fished them and imagining how I might change my approach next year.

The pictures are beautiful and informative, and the illustrations are clear and easy to understand.

The book is available from Orvis online, through your local bookstore and through the Ottawa Public Library system as well.
